About
An AI translator between Chitonga and English, taught from Tonga school books, stories and the work of Tonga teachers. It makes mistakes, especially with names, long sentences and local forms. Do not use it for medical instructions.
When you fix a line, a second Tonga speaker on our desk checks it before it is used to train the translator. Tonga differs from place to place, so the area you give is kept as you type it: a different form is data, not a mistake.
What we keep: the text, the translation, your fix, and if you give them, "I speak Tonga", your area and a nickname. No names, no phone numbers, no IP addresses: links, phone numbers and e-mail addresses are removed before anything is kept. Nothing anyone writes here is shown to others or used for training until a second speaker has approved it.
The Tonga sayings on this page are quoted from printed sources, named with each one. We do not write Tonga ourselves.
Free for non-commercial use: communities, schools, health, NGOs and research. Not for commercial use. The translator is built on Meta's NLLB-200, which is licensed for non-commercial use only (CC BY-NC 4.0), and ours is too.
